Submission Process

You will need to send your completed application via e-mail to

Please put your entry exactly in this format on the subject line: [Producing Organization][Name of Opera][Applicant Last Name]. For example: MichiganStateUniversityBohemeHelton (diacriticals not necessary, nor the full name of opera if easily identifiable). Please include the full name of your institutions, as we have several members whose universities have the same initials. The Applicant should be the primary contact person submitting the form, not a secretary or assistant. If the Applicant is a Dean or program director rather than conductor or director, please indicate so on the contact information form.

Prepare and include the following:

  • A YouTube link to an uploaded video of a complete live performance or dress rehearsal, with audience, of an eligible production.

No other formats will be accepted. The video should be marked “Unlisted” (not “Public” or “Private”) and should not be password protected. Please label the uploaded video with just the name of the opera and the date.  There should be no identifying information within the name or description of the video, the account used to upload, or within the video itself (such as conductor or director bows).

Videos should be a one camera shoot unless the production is in a non-traditional space which would preclude that from being possible. One-camera videos should not be edited, except to exclude bows and any other identifiers. Pan and scan is encouraged. If you have the technology to superimpose surtitles, that is welcome. An independent microphone system is allowed. Please check that the sound levels on your video are audible.

Please see this page for technical suggestions for uploading your video.

Download the Application and Judging Sheet and provide the information indicated.  Divisions will be filled in by Committee Chairperson upon receipt. All applications must be typed and submitted in Word form for ease of distribution and reassembling. Handwritten or PDF submissions will not be accepted. Please double and triple check your YouTube link to be make sure it is click and play.

Director’s Notes are encouraged but not essential. Feel free to elaborate on any variances in text or about non-standard productions or approaches. Also encouraged are synopses for any productions one might consider unfamiliar or rare. Label the Word document with the name of the opera only.

  • Contact Information Form

Download the Contact Information Form and fill out your name, professional address, university or company affiliation, email and contact phone number. In addition, give up to four names and titles to be included on the certificate if a winner. Handwritten or PDF forms will not be accepted. Electronic signature (i.e. typed name) is acceptable.

Assignment to divisions will be determined after all applications are in and points totaled, with the lower divisions having the fewest points and the highest the most points (see application form). Entries will be divided into multiple judging levels when points have been determined. Categories will be divided evenly.

In fairness to all entrants, it is imperative that the competition application contain complete and accurate information. Therefore, incomplete and/or inaccurate applications and non-working video links are subject to disqualification. The same panel of judges will adjudicate all entries in a Division. The judges reserve the right to limit the number of awards in a category if, in their professional opinion, there are insufficient entries deserving of recognition.

Winners will be notified via email by November 15, 2017 and announced on the NOA website. Awards will be presented at the Annual Convention. NOA may also use provided video and production photos for publicity purposes.

The judges will be provided with the application form, director’s note and judging forms with links and will view the videos. Again, to ensure anonymity of entries, NO identifying references or credits should appear on those materials. Any entry for which the submitted videos or explanatory statement reveals the performance venue or the name of any participating NOA member will be disqualified. The submission fee for entries ruled ineligible will not be refunded.
