Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition

Dominick Argento

We're pleased to announce a substantial gift from composer Dominick Argento that will endow support for two of the NOA competitions!

The National Opera Association has been named as the beneficiary of a substantial gift in support of its Vocal Competition and the Chamber Opera Composition Competition.  The gift comes from composer Dominick Argento, to support singers and composers seeking advanced degrees in music. Once the endowment funds are vested, winners of the competitions will receive sufficient financial support to pay tuition and fees as well as a living stipend.

In recognition and appreciation for the gift, the Board of Directors of the NOA has voted to officially name the competitions the Carolyn and Dominick Argento Vocal Competition and the Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Composition Competition.

Argento has attained international prominence as a composer, and has contributed an enduring body of works. He received the NOA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, in recognition of his career as a composer, and specifically of opera. Carolyn Argento was an accomplished opera singer and voice teacher who made numerous appearances with the Minnesota Opera. Argento frequently called Carolyn his muse, and he wrote many of his vocal works for her.

The gift from the Argentos will support  their shared passion the education for singers and composers who are committed to the future of the art for generations to come.
